Baviaanskloof
Sandwiched between the Baviaans and Kouga mountain ranges, the
Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area encompasses 180 000
hectares and is the third largest conservation area in South
Africa. Built by Thomas Baines in 1880, the 140km road crosses
the Groot Rivier north of Patensie and negotiates five
hair-raising passes and numerous river crossings before ending
at Nuwekloof Pass near Willowmore. The kloof is home to
buffalo, mountain zebra, leopard and numerous other species but
is most famous for its rugged and awe inspiring scenery. The
Baviaanskloof lies to the south-west of Haaspoort and can be
accessed by two routes. The Steytlerville – Willowmore
is the longest in terms of kilometers. Allow 5 hours (255km)
travel time between Haaspoort and Geelhoutsbos.
The alternative Grootrivierspoort - Elandsberge
route is the more scenic route. The road winds through the
valleys and passes of the Groot Winterhoek and
Elandsberge mountain range and joins the main Baviaanskloof road
just north of Patensie. Allow 3 hours (147km) travel time from
Haaspoort to the entrance of the Baviaans Conservation Area.
Grootrivierspoort on the Grootrivierspoort - Elandsberge
route is close enough to be a good morning/afternoon outing from
Haaspoort. See the map below for directions.
